Positions & Duties

The Office of Mayor Sam Liccardo is seeking a talented and creative Social Media and Digital Specialist who would enjoy working in a fast-paced, dynamic office with the goal of creating social media content and attractive, logical, and easy-to-understand information that benefits the residents and businesses of San José. This is an opportunity to exercise your content creation, practice the latest social media trends, bulk up on your digital graphic design, video editing skills, and collaborate to bring policy to life through digital media. The assistant is overseen and guided by the Deputy Digital Media Director, will also take direction from the Communications Director, and will have support and guidance from web coordinators in other departments.

Employees in this classification are not members of the classified civil service and are appointed "at will." Each appointment is for a specified period to be determined by the appointing Mayor and does not extend past the end of the elected official's authority's term. This unclassified position requires a disclosure of outside investments, real property interest, income, and business positions.

The Social Media and Digital Specialist will be responsible for designing a wide variety of pieces that promote, support, and inform the public of the Mayor's policy priorities, initiatives, and events. The type of content produced by the Mayor's Office may include but are not limited to social media content, videos, content calendars, print fliers, presentations, infographics, customized images for print, web, and social media, style guides, and templates that can be easily edited by staff members who do not have design skills. They will also monitor comments/questions on social media platforms, and assist with staffing/editing for recordings, and press conferences.

Relevant Skills and Experience:

-At least 2 years of relevant experience in non-profit, governmental, or public sector work.

-Knowledge of social media platforms and trends, basic graphic design, and how these principles are applicable to different mediums.

-Ability to write, edit and compose content. Writing samples are required, and a written test is also required.

-Ability to adapt to new practices, strong knowledge of current trends, and ability to implement them.

-The ability to determine the process for curating compelling materials by working in partnership with fellow staff members and/or external partners.

-Knowledge of current issues as they apply to the Mayor's initiatives, mainstream media, and the San José community.

-Ability to learn new graphic design techniques as they evolve and become applicable to print, the web, and social media.


-Fluency in Spanish is greatly desired, but not required.

-Experience and skills with Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.

-Solid experience with digital technology and editing software packages (e.g. Avid Media Composer, Lightworks, Premiere, After Effects, and Final Cut).

-Demonstrated video editing ability with a strong portfolio.

-Demonstrated knowledge of how to lead and manage the updating of the social media content calendar and website content.

-Experience in developing and posting social media content, including developing social media written posts.

-Experience in developing original graphics for newsletters, reports, and displays.

-Adobe InDesign experience reflected through the production of brochures, newsletters, handouts, and/or fliers.

-Experience with developing infographics to achieve a compelling message. A strong communicator with exceptional writing skills; Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, with both precision and political- and cultural- sensitivity.

-An individual who brings a flexible and creative approach to every task.

-A highly organized individual who demonstrates sound judgment and extreme attention to detail, with the ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks on tight deadlines.

-Willingness to take direction from Department senior staff while asserting personal initiative to determine the best means to accomplish such tasks or projects and the organizational objective.

-Proficiency in all Microsoft Office Tools (including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook).

-An individual who demonstrates high ethical standards.
