Manager, External Communications Description The group for this position sits in our Atlanta, GA office. However, would be willing to consider candidates from the posted locations to work remotely with occasional required travel to Atlanta. Provides communications counsel, planning and execution of Southern Company Gas and its commercial businesses' external communication strategies. Develops and implements plans to position Southern Company Gas as an innovative industry leader and environmental steward, leveraging digital, media relations and event management experience. Grows visibility of the Southern Company Gas Foundation and leaders' support for the environment, economic development, energy assistance and arts & education. The successful candidate will be a strong written and verbal storyteller with experience placing stories in local, national and trade publications; is able to ideate, organize and implement events to draw media attention; is able to juggle multiple assignments; works well with others and can effectively operate under tight deadlines. JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Work with internal business partners to developing and executing compelling communications plans that support business objectives Writes and edits website content, press releases, social media and marketing materials, among other written materials Provides executive visibility support for Southern Company Gas leaders, as necessary Responds to media inquiries Assists director of external communications with special projects, as necessary Provides management and oversight of two members of the external communications team Tracks and shares results JOB REQUIREMENTS Demonstrated ability to write and edit for a wide variety of formats - print publications, websites, videos scripts, correspondence, opinion columns, speeches, fact sheets, Q, etc. The ability to share published writing samples from news releases, newspaper, TV, online or other similar media upon request is required Demonstrated track record in media relations - the ability to share placements in news outlets is required Bachelor's Degree in journalism, media relations, or a related field Strong communication, relational and technical presentation skills Management experience preferred Media experience preferred Marketing and social media experience a plus A minimum of 8 years' relevant experience preferred. Ability to travel (when Southern Company Gas COVID-19 policies deem it safe and necessary) required ( KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex ideas simply and meaningfully to audiences of diverse backgrounds and education levels. Proactive contributor with an ability to take initiative and be resourceful. Avid consumer of news with a finger on the pulse of the news cycle and an understanding of state of the media industry. Proven ability to manage and complete complex projects in a timely, cost-effective manner. Excellent interpersonal and organization skills, including the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and coordinate with numerous colleagues. Ability to work as part of a team and act quickly with minimal supervision. Basic understanding of the energy industry preferred. Expert in AP style and grammar rules.
