ELECTRICAL INSPECTOR
(Building Inspector II)

NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled inspectional work in securing and maintaining compliance with local and national codes and
regulations governing building construction, and related construction. Work requires inspecting a variety of
electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and building installations and determining whether plans, workmanship, and
materials conform with legally established requirements. The employee works independently on field
inspections and must make decisions exercising technical judgment; superior is available for consultation and
direction on more difficult and unusual cases. Work is subject to periodic checks and reviews by a technical
superior.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following examples of work are illustrative only and are not intended to be all
inclusive:
Inspects residential, commercial, and industrial electrical installations and equipment in new and existing
building for compliance with provisions of local and national electrical, plumbing, mechanical and building
codes; records findings; makes recommendations on correct methods of installation.
Checks electrical installation plans and specifications for compliance with required codes; confers with
electrical contractors concerning electrical installations and correction of work done; consults with supervisor
relative to procedures to be followed in cases that are not clearly covered by the codes; confers with owners
or with their agents concerning electrical installations where alterations are contemplated or are in progress.
Assists and advises builders in designing or relocating electrical installations in existing buildings and or in
proposed new construction; assists in design for electrical installation of city facilities.
Inspects building construction for compliance with code requirements; interprets and explains building,
plumbing, mechanical and other codes to builders, home owners, and other interested parties.
Writes permits for various building remodel or construction projects along with necessary electrical and
mechanical permits.
Prepares and administers tests for journeyman and master electrician licenses.
Performs related work as required and other duties as assigned.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices involved in constructing, installing, maintaining and
operating a variety of electrical installations, equipment, and appliances desirable.
Knowledge of local and national regulations and laws relating to electrical appliances, and installations
desirable.
Ability to understand and work from plans, drawings, and diagrams.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school; minimum of five years experience as a journeyman electrician; or any equivalent
combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Valid Nebraska driver's license
Must possess a Nebraska Journeyman Electrical License
Must pass Nebraska Electrician Inspection test within 6 months
Must pass ICC Certified Building Inspection exam within 1 year
